Company History

Gary J. Doran founded Creative Finishing Systems, Inc, in 1992. With early investments from James L. Doran, Gary's father, who operated "Bookbinder's Services, Inc." and "Freccia Bookbinders' Sales", and the first hire of Gary's Sister-in-Law, Jeanne A. Doran in 1994, the company gradually grew through the 90's into a full service operation. In the course of visiting European trade exhibitions he learned that production of bookbinding machinery was originating from numerous tiny assembly shops in Italy, Switzerland, Spain and France. However, these companies, although incredibly ingenious, could not bring their products to the larger markets because they lacked professional marketing and sales organizations. Germany usually took the lead in studying European productions and inevitably controlled the future of such companies - either purchasing the developments, duplicating them or denying their existence through stronger economical power.

In the United States, manufacturers through the period of the 1990's have continued to diversify products working generally in niche markets due to the unprecedented competition. Special machines and custom developments have become the necessity of the market here. CFS has sought to fill this void by initiating numerous contacts with specialty machine manufactures particularly in Europe, but also from small US firms and elsewhere. From 1995 through 2000 the growth of the company has been steady, each year posting an average increase of 100%.

Beginning in 1997, the company realized that it needed to develop other machine systems not available from its supplying manufacturers. The production of a specialty book Casemaker Model "4LCU" for the Library Binding Industry began as a start, leading to further developments for them and the other bookbinding industries. This successful enterprise has given great impetus to the company's determination to serve in a larger way the demand for customized bookbinding machinery solutions.

Multiple-use Machines: Electronic media has to a sufficient degree changed traditional bindery markets requiring print finishing manufacturers to look for other sources of revenue. Compressed market share have forced these manufacturers to rethink the way they use machines to generate income. In the 1990's many such manufacturers began studying the purchase of bindery machines and lines that could be utilized in the production of various types of finished goods for new industries. Creative Finishing Systems, Inc. has been successful in convincing these manufacturers of the necessity to purchase the correct capital equipment suitable for multiple production purposes. An example of this type of creativity is the model Virgo: it can produce case-made products such as book covers, ring-binder covers, point of purchase displays, game boards, and photo albums. We recommend that you consider the useful duration of any machine system before buying to be sure it will survive the constantly changing markets.
